Anxiety is a genuine mind-body response and cannot always be stopped by simply “thinking positively”. Persistent worry may come with restlessness, muscle tension, a faster heartbeat, chest tightness, stomach symptoms, dizziness, fatigue and difficulty sleeping.
TCM may offer supportive care based on emotional, sleep, digestive and general patterns, but physical causes such as thyroid disease, anaemia, heart-rhythm problems, medicines and excess caffeine should first be considered. Evidence-based care also includes talking therapies, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, and medication when assessed as appropriate.
Seek help when anxiety affects work, relationships or daily life. New or severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting or persistent irregular heartbeat requires prompt medical attention and should not be assumed to be anxiety.
Slower breathing may reduce arousal but does not explain every episode of chest tightness or palpitations. Recording triggers, sensations, avoidance and duration helps professionals choose appropriate support.
